Security is a key requirement in today’s mobile computing platforms as an enabler for revenue generating applications and as a protection mechanism against malicious attacks, loss, fraud and theft. In the consumer market, the need for security spans a diverse range of products including mobile devices, USB Flash drives, memory cards, high capacity SIM cards, hard disk drives and wireless LANs.
Previous attempts to grapple with security in other markets have led to two inescapable conclusions:
- Security must be built into a system from its inception, and cannot be added "bolted on" to a device. The PC industry has learned this lesson at great cost and embarrassment.
- "Software security is soft security" (Gartner). Security solutions must provide more then just functionality. They must be attack resistant themselves which is best achieved by a hardware based approach.
Challenges faced by device manufacturers include:
- Security is computationally intensive, demanding large amounts of resources
- The solution cannot impede the user experience
- Security requires unique and specialized expertise
These are the opportunities and challenges addressed by Discretix’ embedded security solutions.
