WM DRM
Microsoft Windows Media (WM) DRM
Discretix Multi-Scheme DRM Client supports Windows Media DRM 10 specifications for Portable Devices. The Client enables playback of protected Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Windows Media Video (WMV) files that are encapsulated in a protected ASF file. Discretix Multi-Scheme DRM Client supports the following business models:
- Content Purchase: User pays a one-time fee and gets an unlimited access to the content on a single or multiple device(s).
- Content Subscription: User gets an unlimited access from a single device to the entire content library for a limited time.
- Content Rental: User gets an unlimited access to a specific content item for a limited time on a single or multiple device(s).
Indirect License Acquisition Discretix Multi-Scheme DRM Client supports the Indirect License Acquisition method. Mobile device users can download content items to their PCs and then transfer them over Microsoft’s Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) to the mobile device. Once these media files are transferred they can be consumed on the device supporting all the business models enabled by WM-DRM Rights Expression Language.
Direct License Acquisition Discretix Multi-Scheme DRM Client supports the Direct License Acquisition method. Using this method content items and their licenses arrive directly to the device without using a PC as a proxy. DLA process is different between the different service providers. Discretix Multi-Scheme DRM Client includes APIs that can be used in the DLA process for the license acquisition and storing processes and also a reference code of the WMDRM DLA helper function, a key component in the DLA process.
Complying with Microsoft’s C&R Rules With the release of Windows Media DRM, Microsoft has also published a set of requirements regarding the different features of Windows Media DRM and a set of robustness requirements for Windows Media DRM implementers. Discretix fully complies with this requirements spec (called in short Microsoft’s C&R). Discretix solution is based on Discretix Security Middleware to ensure the highest robustness level and to comply with Microsoft’s robustness requirements.
The Development of Windows Media DRM Standard In 1999 Microsoft added DRM capabilities to its media player. In 2004 the company released a new version of its DRM scheme, Windows Media DRM V10 (WM-DRM 10, a.k.a. Janus). For the first time, this version was targeted not just for the PC world but also for portable media players, cellular phones and other media playing devices.
